This calculator determines shelf spacing, cutting dimensions, and sheet material quantities for a bookcase with fixed top/bottom and adjustable internal shelves.
Shelf spacing formula
Shelf spacing = (Internal height - (Number of shelves x Thickness)) / (Number of shelves + 1)
Internal height = Overall height - (2 x material thickness) for the fixed top and bottom.
Material calculation
Total area includes: 2 sides (full height x depth), top + bottom + all shelves (internal width x depth). This is divided by the standard UK sheet size (2440 x 1220mm) and rounded up.
This is a theoretical minimum based on total area only — it does not account for cutting kerf, grain direction or offcut waste from real 1D strip nesting. Long parts (such as full-height sides) rarely nest perfectly, so order at least one extra sheet of carcass material for any non-trivial build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard paperbacks need 220-250mm of shelf height. Hardbacks need 270-300mm. Art books and large-format volumes may need 350mm or more. Adjustable shelves allow you to vary spacing. A common layout has one tall bay (300mm+) at the bottom and shorter bays (250mm) above.
For 18mm MDF loaded with books (approximately 50 kg/m), the maximum span before noticeable sag is about 600mm. 18mm plywood can span 750mm. 22mm solid oak can span about 900mm. Add a central divider or use thicker material for wider bookcases.
Standard bookcases are 200-300mm deep. 200mm suits paperbacks, 250mm suits most hardbacks, and 300mm accommodates large-format books and files. Do not make shelves deeper than needed, as books get pushed to the back and the unit becomes top-heavy.
A back panel (usually 6mm MDF or plywood) is strongly recommended. It prevents racking (the bookcase leaning sideways), keeps the unit square, and stops items falling behind. Pin and glue it into a rebate for the neatest finish.
The total panel area of a 900mm wide x 1800mm tall bookcase with 5 shelves (two sides plus seven 864mm shelves at 250mm deep) is about 2.4 m², which is roughly 0.8 of a 2440 x 1220mm sheet. The calculator divides total area by sheet area, so it reports this as a theoretical minimum of 1 sheet. In practice you cannot nest the two 1800mm-long sides and seven 864mm shelves into a single sheet, so buy 2 full sheets of 18mm to allow for cutting kerf, grain direction and offcuts, plus a sheet of 6mm material for the back.
