Cabinet Door Calculator — Door Dimensions & Overlay
Work out cabinet door dimensions, overlay calculations, and hinge requirements.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines cabinet door dimensions based on the opening size, overlay type, and number of doors per opening.
Overlay formulas
Full/Half overlay: Door width = (Opening + 2 x Overlay - Gaps) / Number of doors
Inset: Door width = (Opening - (Number of doors + 1) x Gap) / Number of doors
The height calculation follows the same logic. Hinge count is determined by door height: 2 hinges up to 1000mm, 3 up to 1500mm, 4 up to 2000mm, and 5 above 2000mm. Hinges are positioned 75-100mm from the top and bottom edges, with any middle hinges spaced evenly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Full overlay doors cover the entire face frame, with only a small gap between adjacent doors. Half overlay covers approximately half the face frame stile width on each side. Inset doors sit flush within the opening. Full overlay gives a modern, seamless look while inset is more traditional.
A gap of 2-3mm between adjacent doors is standard for overlay designs. For inset doors, 1.5-2mm all around is typical. In humid environments, increase gaps slightly to allow for wood movement. Use consistent shims during fitting for even gaps.
As a height guide: doors up to about 1000mm tall need 2 hinges, 1000-1500mm need 3, 1500-2000mm need 4, and over 2000mm need 5. Add an extra hinge for doors wider than 600mm or unusually heavy ones (solid timber, glass). Place the top hinge 75-100mm from the top edge and the bottom hinge the same distance from the bottom, then space any middle hinges evenly between them.
The 35mm cup hinge (Blum 110 degree or similar) is the standard for most cabinet doors in the UK. Use 110-degree opening for standard doors, 170-degree for doors that need to open wider. The 35mm cup hole is bored so its centre sits about 22.5mm from the door edge (commonly 21-23mm depending on overlay and mounting plate) — that is the 17.5mm cup radius plus roughly 5mm boring distance.
