Hardwoods like oak, iroko, or teak are the most durable choices for outdoor tables. Pressure-treated softwood (32mm thick minimum) is a more affordable alternative. Use stainless steel or coated screws and bolts to prevent corrosion staining on the timber.

Outdoor table top boards should be at least 32mm thick (25mm minimum for lighter use). Thicker boards are more stable and less prone to warping in the weather. For a premium feel, 40-45mm boards give a substantial, durable top.

Allow 600mm width per person along the table sides. A 4-seater is typically 1200 x 750mm, a 6-seater 1500 x 900mm, and an 8-seater 1800 x 900mm. Standard height is 735mm. Leave 900mm clearance around the table for chair movement.

Apply a high-quality exterior wood oil (teak oil, Danish oil) or an outdoor varnish. Reapply oil every 6-12 months. Keep the table covered or stored under shelter in winter. Hardwood tables can be left untreated and will weather to a silver-grey patina.
