This calculator estimates wood weight using the relationship between volume and density.
The formula
Weight (kg) = Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³)
Volume is calculated as thickness × width × length (all in mm), then divided by 10&sup9; to convert to cubic metres.
About wood density
Wood density varies by species and is measured at a standard moisture content of 12%. The density figures used here are average values — individual boards can vary by ±10% depending on growth conditions and the part of the tree the board came from.

The calculator uses average air-dried density values for each species. Actual weight varies with moisture content, grain pattern, and growing conditions. Freshly felled timber can weigh 50–100% more than kiln-dried stock due to water content.
The listed densities are for air-dried timber at approximately 12% moisture content, which is the standard for kiln-dried joinery-grade timber in the UK. Green (freshly cut) timber has much higher moisture content and weighs significantly more.
Wood weight matters for transport (vehicle load limits), structural design (dead loads on shelves and supports), shipping costs, and workshop safety (handling heavy pieces). Knowing the weight also helps estimate drying times.
Among common woodworking species, ebony (950 kg/m³) and lignum vitae (1,230 kg/m³) are the heaviest. Among domestic UK species, European oak (720 kg/m³) and ash (680 kg/m³) are relatively heavy. Western red cedar (370 kg/m³) and spruce (450 kg/m³) are among the lightest.
