This calculator estimates wood glue quantities based on the area of your joints and the recommended spread rate for your chosen glue type.
The formula
Glue needed (g) = Total joint area (m²) x Spread rate (g/m²)
Joint area is calculated from the length and width of each joint surface. If gluing both sides (recommended), the area is doubled.
Spread rates used
PVA: 175 g/m² | Polyurethane: 150 g/m² | Hide glue: 200 g/m² | Aliphatic resin: 175 g/m². These are industry-standard rates for optimal bond strength.

The recommended spread rate for PVA wood glue is approximately 150-200 g/m² for a single glue line. This calculator uses 175 g/m² as the standard rate. For end-grain joints, you may need more as end grain absorbs glue more readily.
For the strongest bond, apply glue to both mating surfaces. This doubles the glue area calculation. Single-sided application can work for face-grain to face-grain joints but is not recommended for edge joints or end grain.
PVA glue typically reaches handling strength in 30-60 minutes and full cure in 24 hours at 20°C. Polyurethane glue takes 1-4 hours for initial set and 24 hours for full cure. Temperature below 10°C significantly slows drying.
Unopened PVA glue lasts 1-2 years. Once opened, use within 12 months. Store between 10-25°C. If the glue has lumps, a stringy texture, or has separated and won't remix, it should be replaced.
