Wood Plug Calculator — Conceal Screw Holes
Determine plug sizes and quantities for concealing screw holes in woodworking projects.
How We Calculate This
This calculator helps you plan plug quantities, drill bit sizes, and costs for concealing screw holes in your woodworking project.
The process
1. Drill a counterbore using a Forstner bit matching the plug diameter. 2. Drive the screw into the counterbore. 3. Apply glue and insert the plug. 4. Once dry, trim flush with a sharp chisel or flush-cut saw.
Best practice
For invisible plugs, cut your own from matching offcuts using a plug cutter. Align the grain direction of the plug with the surrounding wood for the best visual match.
Frequently Asked Questions
A face-grain plug is cut with a plug cutter so the grain runs across the plug face, matching the surrounding wood. A pellet (cross-grain plug) has the grain running along its length. Face-grain plugs blend in better; pellets are a deliberate decorative feature.
Use a Forstner bit the same diameter as your plugs. Forstner bits cut flat-bottomed holes with clean walls, which is essential for a tight plug fit. Brad-point bits can work but produce a pointed bottom.
Typically 6-12mm deep is sufficient. The plug needs to sit flush with or slightly proud of the surface. Deeper holes waste more wood and can weaken thin stock. The screw head should sit at the bottom of the counterbore.
