How Many Nails Do I Need for Framing?

Quick Answer

Allow 8 nails per stud plus 4 per noggin, then add 10%

Based on: 3-4 skew nails per stud-to-plate joint, top and bottom. A 4.8m × 2.4m partition at 400mm centres needs about 150 nails, so order around 170.

How We Calculated This

Worked example: a non-loadbearing partition 4.8m long and 2.4m high, studs at 400mm centres:

  • Studs: 4,800 ÷ 400 = 12 bays, so 13 studs including both ends
  • Stud fixings: 13 studs × 2 joints (top and bottom plate) × 4 skew nails = 104 nails
  • Noggins: 12 noggins × 4 nails (allow two per end) = 48 nails
  • Subtotal: 152 nails; add roughly 10% for bent nails and splits: order about 170

If you use 3 skew nails per joint rather than 4, the same wall takes about 126 nails, so 130-170 is the realistic ordering range. Fixings for the head and sole plates into the ceiling joists and floor are on top of this, and are often screwed rather than nailed.

Nails Per Joint

  • Stud to head or sole plate: skew nailing (also called tosh or toe nailing) at roughly 30-45°, driven in opposing pairs; typically 3-4 nails per joint
  • Noggins: stagger them and you can nail square through the stud into each end; in-line noggins take one square-nailed end and one skew-nailed end. Allow 2 nails per end when ordering

What Size Framing Nails?

  • By hand: 75-100mm round wire nails, with 100mm (4in) the usual choice for 47 × 100mm (4 × 2) framing
  • Framing nailer: 90mm collated nails, typically ring shank, with a shank around 2.8-3.3mm
  • Rule of thumb: nail length about 2.5× the thickness of the piece being fixed, or 3× for structural work; see the nail size calculator

Why 400mm Centres?

Studs are set at 400mm or 600mm centres so the edges of a standard 1,200mm-wide plasterboard sheet always land on a stud. 400mm is the usual choice for partitions because wider spacing lets the board flex; 450mm centres suit 900mm-wide boards. Your stud count, and therefore your nail count, follows directly from the wall length divided by the centres, plus one.

A Note on Structural Work

These quantities are for non-loadbearing partitions and general workshop framing. Load-bearing walls, floors and roofs need connections designed to Building Regulations and Eurocode 5, where the nail schedule comes from the structural design, not a rule of thumb.
