Lining Calculator — Fabric & Felt for Boxes

Calculate fabric or felt quantities for lining boxes and cases.

Line the base
Line the sides
Line the lid

How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates the fabric or felt needed to line the interior surfaces of a box.

Area calculation

Base = Length x Width

Sides = 2(L x D) + 2(W x D)

Lid = Length x Width

Each piece includes an overlap allowance (default 20mm) added to every cut edge for folding under and trimming.

Fabric length

Each interior face is a flat rectangle of fabric. The calculator nests these pieces across your roll width — piecesAcross = floor(roll width ÷ piece width), then rows = ceil(pieces ÷ piecesAcross) — and sums the linear run pulled down the roll, plus a 12% hand-cutting waste allowance. If a face is wider than the roll it is flagged, since it would need seaming. Pile fabrics (velvet, ultrasuede) are not rotated, because the pile must lie the same way on every piece, so they use slightly more length than plain felt or baize.
