Veneer Calculator — Sheet Quantities for Veneering
Calculate veneer sheet quantities for box and panel veneering.
Recommended to prevent warping
Adds a margin for trimming, grain matching and defects (15–25% typical for sheet veneer)
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines the number of veneer sheets needed based on the total panel area, number of sides, and waste allowance.
Formula
Total area = Panel length x Panel width x Number of panels x Sides x Waste factor
Sheets needed = ceil(Total area / Veneer sheet area)
The waste factor is 1.15 (15% extra) when wastage is included. This accounts for trimming, matching, and grain alignment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, always veneer both sides of a panel to balance the construction and prevent warping. Even the back (non-visible) side should have a balancing veneer of similar thickness. This is called a balanced construction and is essential for flat panels.
Allow 10-15% extra for waste due to trimming, matching, and any defective areas. For book-matched or pattern-matched layouts, allow 20-25% extra. Veneer is relatively inexpensive compared to solid wood, so it is better to have too much than too little.
PVA (yellow glue) is the most common for flat panel veneering with a press or vacuum bag. Contact adhesive works for curved surfaces and iron-on edging. Hide glue is traditional and allows re-working with heat. Use Titebond Original or Cascamite for best results.
Standard decorative veneer is 0.5-0.7mm thick. Constructional veneer (for laminating) is 1.0-1.5mm. Iron-on edge banding is typically 0.5mm with a pre-applied adhesive. Sawn veneer (for restoration) can be 1.5-3.0mm thick.
