How We Calculate This
Base drying times are adjusted for temperature and humidity.
Temperature factor: Drying approximately doubles for each 10°C below 20°C.
Humidity factor: Higher humidity slows drying. Roughly each 30 percentage-point rise in relative humidity above the 50% reference doubles drying time (e.g. 40% to 70% RH about doubles it).
These are estimates only. Always check the manufacturer's instructions and test dryness before recoating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Touch dry means the surface feels dry and is not tacky. Recoat time is when you can apply the next coat. Full cure is when the finish has reached maximum hardness and chemical resistance. A polyurethane may be touch dry in 4 hours but takes 30 days to fully cure.
Yes, significantly. As a rough rule, drying time doubles for each 10°C drop in temperature. Most finishes work best at 18-25°C. Below 10°C, many finishes will not cure properly.
Yes. High humidity slows evaporation-based drying (varnish, lacquer) and can cause blushing in shellac and lacquer. However, water-based polyurethane actually needs some humidity to cure properly.
