Sheet Goods Calculator — Plywood, MDF & Chipboard

Calculate how many sheets of plywood, MDF, or chipboard you need for your project area.

Include 10% waste allowance

Recommended for cutting losses and offcuts

How We Calculate This

This calculator works out how many sheet goods you need based on your project area.

The calculation

Sheets needed = Project area ÷ Sheet area

The result is rounded up to whole sheets, since you cannot buy partial sheets.

This is an area-coverage estimate: it assumes the surface can be seamed from multiple sheets (flooring, sheathing, wall or roof cladding). If any single piece must come out in one length wider or longer than a sheet (for example a 1300 mm run from a 1220 mm-wide sheet), set out a cut layout to confirm the count, as a seam may force an extra sheet.

Waste allowance

When enabled, the calculator adds 10% to the area before dividing by sheet area. This accounts for saw kerf (typically 3mm per cut), offcuts that cannot be reused, and trimming damaged edges.

Standard UK sheet sizes

  • 2440 × 1220mm (8′ × 4′) = 2.977 m²
  • 3050 × 1525mm (10′ × 5′) = 4.651 m²
  • 2440 × 610mm (half sheet) = 1.488 m²
