How high should the blade be for a through cut?

Set the blade so the gullets (the valleys between teeth) are just above the top of the workpiece, typically 3mm above the surface. This gives the best cut quality and helps clear sawdust from the cut.

Is it safer to have the blade lower?

There is a debate about this. A lower blade reduces the exposed blade and changes the angle of tooth entry. Many experts recommend the blade just above the surface for the best balance of safety and cut quality. Always use a riving knife and blade guard.
