Table Saw Fence Calculator — Rip Fence Position
Work out fence positions for ripping stock to width including kerf allowance.
How We Calculate This
Piece between blade and fence: Fence position = Desired width
Piece on offcut side: Fence position = Desired width + Kerf width
Always measure from the blade teeth nearest the fence, not the blade body.
Frequently Asked Questions
Measure from the side of the blade teeth closest to the fence. The teeth are wider than the blade body (the set), so measuring from the body gives an incorrect reading.
If the desired piece is between the blade and fence, set the fence to exactly the desired width — the kerf is on the waste side. If cutting off a specific width from the left of the blade, add the kerf width.
Use a tape measure to set approximate position, then make a test cut in scrap. Measure the result with callipers and micro-adjust. Some aftermarket fence systems have fine adjustment mechanisms.
